I think this is a small red cabezon. Let me know if I am wrong. It was only 5" long.

I believe that you are correct and that this is, in fact, a Cabezon. Most divers do not know this, but Cabezons can change their color to blend with their surroundings (not as fast as Octopus can, however!). I would suspect that this one might have been hanging out amongst some red algae (Gigartina?) that is often bright red when it is young and darkens with age.

This was at Three Tree in the junk yard. The fish was inside of a folding chair frame, so I wasnt able to compose better, but I wanted to take the picture to ID the fish. Notice the gunnel under his chin. He was chowing it.
